🥕 Pole Bean

Phaseolus vulgaris
vegetables legume
Illustration of Pole Bean
☀️ Sun
Full sun (6–8+ hours); tolerates partial shade but yields decrease proportionally
💧 Water
Medium; 1 inch per week; critical during flowering and pod development; water at base to avoid fungal issues on leaves
🗺️ Zones
3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
🪴 Soil Type
Moderately fertile, well-drained loam; avoid excessive nitrogen — beans self-fertilize
🧪 Soil pH
6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to slightly alkaline)
💧 Drainage
Well-drained essential; raised beds or hills recommended if drainage is poor
📏 Spacing
Seeds 3–4 inches apart at base of trellis/pole; rows 36–48 inches apart; need 6–8 ft tall support (teepee, trellis, or corn stalks)
📅 Days to Maturity
60-75 days (from seed); continuous harvest for 4-8 weeks after first picking

🍴 Edible Parts

🍽️ ["Young pods (snap beans)"🍽️ "Mature seeds (shelling/dried beans)"🍽️ "Young leaves (edible cooked🍽️ used in some cuisines)"]

🤝 Companions (6)

🤝 Corn
Classic Three Sisters guild — pole beans climb corn stalks (living trellis) while fixing nitrogen for nitrogen-hungry corn
Repels Mexican bean beetle; traditional pairing improves growth and flavor
Radishes repel bean beetles and cucumber beetles; fast-growing radishes are harvested before beans need the space
Repels Mexican bean beetles; aromatic oils deter pests
Nematode suppression; repels bean beetles
Trap crop for aphids and bean beetles; climbing varieties can share trellis

⚠️ Keep Apart (5)

⚠️ Alliums (onion, garlic, chives, leek)
Inhibit Rhizobium nitrogen-fixing bacteria; significantly reduce bean growth and yield
Allelopathic — releases growth-inhibiting compounds from roots and fallen seeds
Both are competitive for space and nutrients; sunflowers may have allelopathic effects on beans (conflicting evidence — some sources say neutral)
Mutual growth inhibition — cabbage and pole bean stunt each other's development when planted in close proximity.
Mutual growth inhibition — rutabaga and pole bean stunt each other's development when planted in close proximity.

💊 Medicinal Uses

["Excellent source of soluble fiber \u2014 beneficial for cholesterol and blood sugar management", "High plant-based protein, iron, folate, magnesium", "Traditional: bean pod decoction as mild diuretic"]

📝 Notes

Pole beans produce continuously over 6–8 weeks (vs. bush beans' single flush). They're more space-efficient vertically and yield 2–3x more per square foot. Unlike bush beans, pole beans keep producing as long as you keep picking. Provide sturdy trellis at planting time — do not disturb roots later. Inoculate with Rhizobium for first planting.
